Music and visuals combine to make an enjoyable experience. One thing that the game has going for it is the style. Sometimes everything clicks and sometimes nothing does. The game is constantly throwing new mechanics at you, but doesn't seem interested in helping you actually get better at the game. One of the core issues is level design, which is desperately lacking in some parts. The first few worlds seem to be geared around the assumption that you'll go for collectables, but if you don't care about those you'll breeze right through the levels. The difficulty doesn't really have a natural progression to it. On one level, you might beat it first try in 20 seconds, but on the next you might get stuck there for dozens of minutes, only for it to go back to extremely easy on the next level. The campaign mode varies significantly in quality between levels. Besides that, Banana Mania doesn't have a whole lot going for it. The game is fundamentally the same as previous entries in the series, which is fine since the core physics and movement is pretty tight. Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania isn't very impressive. Any smaller area that you have to move around the camera to see? Good luck. And on top of this, you have the ridiculously, almost sloth-like levels of slow camera. I realize that the premise of Monkey Ball is that you tilt the stage instead of controlling the ball, but in this game it never really feels like you're able to position yourself exactly where you'd like to be. At first I thought I couldn't get into story mode the levels were generic and theme and the story was almost nonexistent, but then I realized that one of my favorite games of this year was Mario Party Superstars, so if I can greatly enjoy a game with no story, why didn't I like it? Well, I think it boils down to the purest form of gaming, the gameplay itself. The worst part is that I really do not know why I didn't simply fall in love with game. Yeah I'm sorry everyone, but this game is just simply not for me. Including the fan favorite "Monkey Target." So I finally scrapped together $40 and went in on the series for the first time, and I am extremely happy to report that I regret buying this instead of Cruis N Blast. It looked to be completely faithful to the originals, and the game even brought back all the extra party modes so we can play with friends. So when I saw a banana and monkey pop up in a Nintendo direct I immediately got stoked for this compilation. But unfortunately because the retro games market looks like *THIS* right now, I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of one of the original games. It's always been an ever present series in my circle of friends that's consistently brought up in need of rebooting. 4h 52m PlayedSuper Monkey Ball is one of those niche games that you hear about forever from everyone else who do nothing but praise the game.
